Some say, “We can’t know anything.” Others seem to think they know everything. The truth is somewhere in the middle, for we can know the truth (John 8:32; 1 John 2:21), but we will not understand many things until we get to heaven (1 John 3:1–2).
Consider fifteen “knows” in 1 John.
We can know the following:
- “We know Him” (1 John 2:3–4).
- “We are in Him” (1 John 2:5).
- Who is born of God (1 John 2:29).
- We will be like Him (1 John 3:1–3).
- “He was manifested to take away our sins” (1 John 3:5).
- We have “passed from death to life” (1 John 3:14).
- “We are of the truth” (1 John 3:19).
- “He abides in us” (1 John 3:24).
- The Spirit of God abides (1 John 4:2, 3, 6).
- “Everyone that loves knows God” (1 John 4:7–8).
- “We abide in him” (1 John 4:13).
- “We love the children of God” (1 John 5:2–3).
- We have eternal life (1 John 5:11–13).
- He hears us (1 John 5:14–15).
- The whole world lies in wickedness (1 John 5:19). —Dan Winkler
